Pillow Fight Day is a worldwide fun and non-commercial public event initiated by pillowfightday.com, a site run by the Urban Playground Movement (UPM). This year, 2010, the event was held in nearly 100 cities around the world.
UPM wants such a happening to become a vivid part of pop culture, creating an interesting alternative to “passive urban culture” based on consumption and TV-watching.
Pillow fights create interesting social phenomena, says UPM. They open participants emotionally. “People will make new friends, re-unite with old ones, meet future lovers and revel in the blissful one-ness of a free, fun, social gathering.”
Pillow happenings are organized for public involvement. The idea is to hold a fight in the most downtown squares, sometimes making it impossible for bypasses not to get involved. Only this way a city might fully benefit from the energy generated by such events.
One of the rules of the event is “never [to] ask permission”. UPM underlines that a public assembly is a human right. They say it’s very unlikely that any city hall in the world would grant anyone a permit for a pillow fight. We hope it will change in the future.
